Within an hour’s drive are a host of contrasting attractions, from the stunning islands of Ile de Ré and Ile d’Oléron, and an coastline which boasts mile after mile of beautiful beaches, to the idyllic ‘Green-Venice’ that is the Marais Poitevin.

For the children there is the nearby Asinerie (donkey sanctuary) and slightly further a field is the virtual-reality theme park Futoroscope.

There are excellent golf courses at Niort, Cognac and Saintes, and with its three major rivers, the Charente, the Dordogne, and the Gironde, the region is a mecca for anglers (passes available locally). Naturally, the area is overflowing with vineyards where you can sample the local wine, pineau, and cognac. And of course there are the historic towns themselves - La Rochelle, Poitiers, Saintes, and of course Cognac.

The south-west facing house is situated on the edge of a hamlet of four houses on a quiet country lane, and has plentiful off-street parking on a large gravel drive. The garden is laid mainly to level lawns, with a well, a bread-oven, mature fruit trees, and a vine trellis. There is also a walled courtyard terrace which offers excellent outdoor eating facilities as well as an illuminated and more sheltered spot for those cooler evenings at the ends of the season.
